What is lymphedemia

Lymphedema is a chronic condition where lymph fluid builds up in the tissues, causing swelling—most commonly in the arms or legs. It happens when the lymphatic system is damaged or blocked, so fluid can’t drain properly.is a common side effect of many health conditions. It’s also common among people recovering from cancer treatments, most notably, breast cancer surgery because surgeons remove several lymph nodes during the procedure.

Comon Symptoms

Typically, your lymphatic system collects your lymph and returns it to your heart via a network of vessels and nodes. When something disrupts this process, lymph collects in your arms, legs, ankles or other parts of your body, making them swell.

Most often:
•     Arms
•     Legs
But it can also affect:
•     Chest wall
•     Abdomen
•     Neck
•     Genitals

Common Symptoms
•     Swelling in part or all of a limb
•     Heaviness or tightness
•     Reduced range of motion
•     Thickened or hardened skin (fibrosis)
•     Recurring infections
•     Clothing or jewelry feeling tighter
•     Aching or discomfort in the limb
 

 


There are 2 Types of Lymphedema
 


Primary Lymphedema
•     Caused by genetic or developmental issues in the lymphatic system
•     Can appear at birth, during puberty, or in adulthood
Secondary Lymphedema
•     Caused by damage to lymph nodes or vessels
•     Most common type
•     Often related to cancer treatment, surgery, infection, or trauma

There is no cure, but symptoms can be controlled. Treatments include:
•     Manual lymphatic drainage (MLD)
•     Compression garments or bandaging
•     Gentle exercise
•     Elevation
•     Skin care to prevent infection
•     Pneumatic compression pumps
•     In rare cases, surgery

 

Who Should or Should not recieve Lymphatic Drainage Massage

1. Individuals with Lymphedema (Primary or Secondary)
MLD is one of the core treatments for lymphedema, helping move fluid away from swollen areas.
2. People Who Had Cancer Treatment Affecting Lymph Nodes
Especially those who had:
•     Lymph node removal
•     Radiation to lymph node regions
•     Surgery in the breast, pelvis, groin, or abdomen
These treatments can block lymph flow and cause chronic swelling.
3. People With Post‑Surgical Swelling
MLD can help reduce swelling after certain surgeries (when medically cleared).
4. Individuals With Chronic Venous Insufficiency (without active infection)
MLD can help move stagnant fluid and reduce heaviness.
5. People With Lipedema (when combined with other therapies)
MLD helps reduce discomfort and improve mobility.
6. People With Generalized Swelling or Fluid Retention (when medically appropriate)
Especially when swelling is not caused by heart, kidney, or liver failure.

❌ Who Should NOT Receive MLD
MLD should be avoided in people with:
•     Active infection in the swollen area (redness, heat, fever)
•     Heart failure
•     Kidney failure
•     Liver failure
•     Blood clots or recent stroke
•     Open wounds
